Summer Songs

By Kristen Ayanah

Music is what truly sets the tone for so many people as they maneuver through their everyday life. It’s what people play in their cars, it’s what people play as they get ready to start their day, it’s what people play to uplift their spirits and most importantly to have a great time! Through this Music Moments column, I’ll be covering and sharing the latest music news related to the Hip-Hop, Afrobeats &  Reggae/Dancehall genre. As we know we are in the midst of summer in which music is definitely more important now more than ever! For this month’s column, I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite songs and artists in the Hip-Hop, Afrobeats & Dancehall genre.

Capella Grey - Gyalis

This song is a mix of dancehall and hip-hop. New York artist, Capella Gray samples Juveniles “Back That A** Up” while adding a Caribbean twist. Through his lyrics, we hear patios and various Caribbean dialects.

“They wanna know why

Di gyal dem deh pon Me

Dem eyе green dem

Mind just set pon mi.”

The song has been getting a lot of traction with over 2 million streams on YouTube and receiving a lot of radio play from hip-hop stations in the tri-state area like Hot97 and Power 105.1.

Wiz Kid - Essence ft. Tems

Moving into the AfroBeats genre, this has been deemed the song of the summer by various people on social media. From various memes, and Twitter conversations it can be said that people are definitely enjoying Wiz Kid’s song Essence ft. Tems off his most recent album Made in Lagos that released in 2020. The song is a classic afrobeat tune with beautiful melodies from Tems and stellar lyrics from Wizkid. This track will definitely get you moving your feet at the function.

Nicki Minaj - Seeing Green ft. Lil Wayne & Drake

Nicki Minaj definitely heated things up this summer by re-releasing her previous mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty on major streaming platforms. This mixtape is very iconic because it features some of the tracks that made hip-hop fans fall in love with the female MC. Some of these tracks include I Get Crazy, Itty Bitty Piggy, Best I Ever Had (Remix) and so much more.  In addition to releasing this mixtape, Nicki added three new tracks which are Seeing Green, Crocodile Teeth (Remix), and Fractions. Many people have been enjoying the track Seeing Green because it’s the first time in about two years that we have seen Nicki, Wayne & Drake on a track together. Between these new tracks and the re-release of this mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty is the highest-charting re-released mixtape from a rapper in hip-hop history.

D’yani - Feelings ft. Jada Kingdom (Remix)

D’yani is a dancehall artist who has been on the scene for a while now. His single Feelings has been getting a lot of traction and gained even more traction once dancehall artist Jada Kingdom jumped on the remix. The song has over a million plays on YouTube and the artists’ melodic voices match perfectly.

These are my top four summer songs at the moment! I hope you enjoy it and can check them out. Happy listening!
