The Princess of Dancehall: Shenseea

by Kristen Ayana

Dancehall has been a musical genre known to be dominated by men. Some of the most popular dancehall artists include Beenie Man, Bounty Killa & Sean Paul just to name a few. As time progresses we then begin to see the rise in women joining the dancehall genre. Some female dancehall artists are Lady Saw, Spice, Maka Diamond & lastly Shenseea.

Born Chinsea Lee in Kingston, Jamaica the 24-year old would be later called one of dancehall’s fastest rising artists.

Shenseea began her career as a promoter girl working various parties in Jamaica. She always loved music from a child & then began uploading various covers of her singing to her social media platforms. Her boss at the time & now manager Romeich came across her videos & encouraged her to get into the studio. He believed Shenseea could be more than a promoter girl. The first single she recorded was Jiggle Jiggle.

“So I wrote the song the same night I got the rhythm I didn't go to bed until 5 in the morning,” Shenseea told host Yendi Phillipps in their sit-down YouTube interview. Romeich told Shenseea that something was missing from the track and the next morning she was back in the studio perfecting the single.

After Jiggle Jiggle was released Shenseea then did a song with dancehall legend Vybz Kartel entitled “Loodi.” This track definitely helped the young female dancehall artist gain even more traction.

Since then Shenseea has gone on to drop numerous tracks and expand internationally. Once signed to interscope records in 2019, Shenseea began collaborating with U.S artists. Her major-label debut single “Blessed” which features popular hip-hop rapper Tyga hit No.2 on Billboard’s Reggae Digital Song Sales chart.

In addition to music, Shenseea has also made her social media presence very known by having over 4 million Instagram followers and landing brand ambassador deals with popular companies like Pretty Little Thing, Boom Energy Drink plus more.

Just last week Shenseea announced that she has added a new manager to her team Wassim Slaiby, who is known for managing artists like Doja Cat, The Weeknd, French Montana, and more. Shenseea last week also released a new single “Run Run” which features an amazing music video. The song is on a reggae rhythm with her spitting passionate lyrics that seem to relate to a previous love interest.

“I Never wanna see your face again

Don't wanna get caught ina u spell

How me make u put me through living hell?” she opens the song with.

Overall, Shenseea is definitely an artist to watch. Through her hard work and brilliant talents, fans can expect her to continue to flourish within the industry and make an impact in dancehall internationally.
