Drake’s Certified Lover Boy: An Album to Remember

by Kristen Ayana

On September 3, 2021, popular rapper Drake released his sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy (CLB). A lot of the tracks on CLB are produced by long-time Drake collaborator Noah James Shebib, better known as 40, who has become a partner in crime to the Toronto-native rapper. Features on the album include artists like  Jay-Z, Travis Scott, Future, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and more. Drake has secured nine of the top 10 Billboard Hot 100 spots, while the other 12 songs on CLB are in the top 40. In addition, CLB has said to be one of the most streamed albums in a day via Spotify and Apple Music.

I personally LOVE this album and have been playing it on a daily since its release. My favorite tracks are Champagne Poetry, Fair Trade, Love All, N 2 Deep & Pipe Down.

Champagne Poetry:

I believe this track is one of Drake’s best intros to this date. The track samples Masego-Navajo, which blends beautifully with the heavy bars Drake is spitting. This track immediately grabs the listener for sure.

Fair Trade:

This track has not only Drake on it but popular rapper Travis Scott, the two are definitely spitting some fire bars going back and fourth with one another. Drake is really tapping into his words of wisdom with lines like “ Feelin' young but they treat me like the OG” & “And the dirt that they threw on my name turned to soil and I grew up out it”.

Love All:

This song has been very popular on TikTok prior to Drake releasing CLB, so the song was actually leaked. I was very happy to learn that this track made the album and was even more shocked when Drake decided to have it feature rap icon Jay-Z.

N 2 Deep:

N 2 Deep is one of my favorite tracks because of the drastic beat change midway through the song. The second half of the song definitely makes you want to turn up, while the first half is slower. In addition, the track features Future. Future & Drake have a long history of making great music especially because they have even done a full album together.

Pipe Down:

I truly know I love a song when I can constantly play it for hours and that is what Pipe Down does to me. The beat is AMAZING and produced by Leon Thomas III, FaxOnly, JEAN BLEU & Anthoine Walters. Drake was definitely showing a lot of emotion when writing this track by expressing his feelings towards a previous love interest.

“I can't believe you put it on your mother's life

I can't believe you told me it was ride or die

'Cause you're not here, somehow you're still alive.”

The rapper was truly in his feels with this track. Overall CLB is a solid Drake project and definitely a great listen for all my hip-hop fans.
