Kristen Ayanah's Top 3 Albums of the Year

By: Kristen Ayanah

2021 has been one crazy year, but I believe something that has kept me through it has definitely been music and my love for it. I have played music constantly every single day this year. With that being said here are my top 3 albums of the year.

  1. Drake - Certified Lover Boy

This album has been one of my favorites this year and honestly one of the albums I’ve anticipated the most. On September 3, 2021, popular rapper Drake released his sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy (CLB). A lot of the tracks on CLB are produced by long-time Drake collaborator Noah James Shebib, better known as 40, who has become a partner in crime to the Toronto-native rapper. Features on the album include artists like  Jay-Z, Future, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and more.

According to my personal Spotify account, my number 1 artist played this year was in fact Drake, and my second most played song this year was “Champagne Poetry” off of CLB.

I believe CLB is one of my favorite Drake projects which is why it has made my top 3 Album of the Year list.

  1. Summer Walker - Still Over It

R&B artist Summer Walker released this album on November 5th, 2021 and it was definitely highly anticipated. Throughout the album, Summer talks about her past love experiences and her break up with her ex-boyfriend/producer London on Da Track. Fans believe Summer does a good job at telling a story of healing through this project.  Still Over It is currently No. 1 on Apple Music All-Genre Chart and all songs are charting between No. 1- No. 22 of the All-Genre Top Songs Chart.

According to my Spotify Summer Walker was my third most played artist this year with her track “Insane” being the most played song on her album Still Over It. I enjoyed the project because it truly told a story and I believe that’s what R&B music is all about.

  1. Wizkid - Made in Lagos

This album was actually released in October 2020 by Afrobeats artist Wizkid but I believe it gained more popularity in 2021. One specific song on the album that fans were raving about was “Essence’ featuring Tems. Many fans deemed this the 2021 song of the summer. Wizkid also release a deluxe version of this project in August of 2021.

According to my Spotify WizKid is my fourth most played artist this year with his track “Longtime” being the most played from the Made in Lagos project.

Overall it’s been a great year for music and I can’t wait to see what 2022 brings. Despite what’s going on in the world music is forever and that’s always something I’ll look forward to.
