Final Say -- Sam Miller

Lili Chopra & Diego Segalini, Executive Directors of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council sent us the following in early May:

"It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Sam Miller, a truly instrumental leader in the arts.

"Sam led LMCC as our former President, joining us in 2010 after his already remarkable career in the arts, shepherding organizations such as Pilobolus, Jacob’s Pillow, and LINC.

"Sam championed LMCC’s existing professional development, grant and residency programs, and led the organization through notable expansions including free cultural programming such as our Arts East River Waterfront initiative and Governors Island exhibitions and residencies. Under Sam’s stewardship, LMCC became the lead presenter of the River To River Festivaland reimagined the festival as a contemporary arts platform showcasing talent in sites across Lower Manhattan. Sam was also an exemplary connector, bridging artists, the public and private sectors, and community partners in Lower Manhattan and beyond.

"Most notably at LMCC, Sam created the Extended Life Dance Development program to provide choreographers with transformational support. Within Extended Life, artists were given opportunities to develop multiple iterations of a work and adapt it to traditional and nontraditional venues, enhancing the sustainability of the artistic process and the careers of participating artists. Over 25 artists passed through the Extended Life Dance Development program, and the work of several of these artists will be featured in the 2018 River To River Festival.

"All of us here at LMCC, and so many of you, have been deeply influenced by Sam's life and presence as a mentor, friend, leader, colleague, and inspiration. We cherish his memory and are grateful for his work.

"LMCC is resolved to continue this critical work with passion and commitment to supporting artists and advocating for the arts."
